Komiza Wreck Diving

Morning came fast for us and at 8:30 we were out the door and 8:40 our cab was heading out of town. At 8:50 we got our first glimpse of the picturesque fishing village of Komiza. The diving hub of Vis, it has a number of easily accessible wreck dives and crystal clear waters.

At 9am we were at our dive shop putting on the thickest wetsuits any of us had ever worn, complete with hoods and booties. At 9:30 we were underway and by 10am we were at our dive site a 1930 cargo ship that ran aground on a small island that had not lighthouse at the time. The shallow nature of the wreck made it possible for divers with our level of certification to explore.

Our group was small, 8 divers and one dive master. The wreck was cool but the highlight of the dive was the pair of medium sized octopus we encountered. One enjoyed playing hide and seek and when he didn’t move he was barely recognizable against the sea floor. The second one played catch me if you can and swam gracefully away as we gave mild chase. So cool!

By 11am we were back on the boat. By 11:30 we were back in shore and by 12:30 we were ordering lunch at the nearby pizzeria. Thankfully we have been advised that the pizza was not very good, so everyone had pasta which was lovely!

At 3 PM we were back at the dive shop preparing for our second dive, a reef dive 15 minute boat ride from the shore. There were only six of us for the second dive and the highlights were moray eels and general underwater beauty, particularly drifting 15m underwater and seeing the incredibly steep drop off into the deep blue abyss.

45 minutes later we were back above surface, with the kids taking advantage of every opportunity to hurl themselves off the boat into the turquoise waters. Tyler tossed in a somersault for good measure.

By 5;30 we are back at the dive shop and out of our wetsuits and ready for some ice cream! We strolled into town and found a cute wharf side café to enjoy the spritz, a lemonade, and some ice cream. We had hoped to find our friends from the catamaran the day before were spending the night Komiza you but they must’ve left before we were able to get to the harbor.

We decided to take the bus back which conveniently left at seven and rather than the 180 Kuna to get across the island we spent 60.

Back at our side of the island, the kids decided that they wanted to make us dinner to which we happily agreed. Pasta, butter, cheese, local tomatoes, cucumbers and a loaf of bread made for an excellent meal on our deck watching the sunset.

We decided to have a quiet night at home, Sue catching up on some work email, and the rest of us watching Mamma Mia 2, part of the inspiration for arriving at Vis. When we finally watch the movie – which was truly terrible – and it’s very limited views of Vis, we wondered how it could’ve become an international sensation!

Day three in the books and we are in love with Vis.
