Welcome to the Julian Alps

Travel days, they’re the worst. Somehow no matter how much you prepare there is always some stressful loop you are throne for and you never know exactly what it’s going to be. Guess that’s the definition of being thrown for a loop.

It was a short five minute walk from the Turner‘s house to Finchley Road but finding the correct bus stop was challenging as the signage was poor. We finally managed to flag down our bus and we’re whisked away to the challenging Stansted airport.

The Stansted airport makes its money by having you buy things on the 30 minute walk to the gate. That would be fine if you had more than 35 minutes to get there and wanted to get food along the way. We did manage to do both but not without some unnecessary stress. Sue was so enraged that she boycotted our classic boarding selfie. Evie made her own subtle protest.

The flight to Ljubljana was fast and easy as was finding our rental car. We did get extremely lucky as the solo rental car agent decided to wait for us as we had booked the pick up for noon and our flight didn’t arrive until 4 PM. Oops!

By 5 o’clock we were on our way in our brand new Ford Focus and by 5:30 we were at the adorable town of Bled. The town is situated at the end of a beautiful lake, underneath the castle with mountains in the background and a chapel on an island in the middle of it all. The kids saw all they needed to see, a lake to swim in, and within minutes they were in their suits and in the water.

As we explored the town we discovered an enclosed water area with water bouncy houses, diving boards, and a comfortable restaurant overlooking it all. The kids jumped and played until the park closed at seven and we all enjoyed a lovely meal overlooking the lake.

As the sun began to hide behind the mountains we got in the car for hour and a half long drive to Bovec, on the far side of Triglav National Park. Along the way it started to pour rain making the dark switch back road just a little bit more white knuckle than it might have been.

We arrived around 10 and snuggled into our adorable two bedroom apartment for a good nights sleep. Welcome to Slovenia!
